How to pass the ICBC knowledge test on your first try
A complete walkthrough of the ICBC Class 7 test format, scoring, and what to study.
The ICBC Class 7L knowledge test is the first step to getting your BC driver's licence. It is 50 multiple-choice questions and you need 40 correct to pass. The questions are drawn from TEST PREP Smart, the official BC driver's handbook.
What is on the test
- Road signs — shape, colour, and meaning of regulatory, warning, and guide signs
- Rules of the road — right of way, intersections, lane changes, passing
- Speed limits, parking rules, and BC-specific laws
- Safe driving practices — following distance, hazards, sharing the road
- Alcohol, drugs, and graduated licensing program (GLP) restrictions
A 7-day study plan
- Day 1–2: Read the Signs and Rules of the Road chapters of TEST PREP Smart.
- Day 3: Take a full 50-question practice test. Mark every wrong answer.
- Day 4: Re-read only the sections covering your wrong answers.
- Day 5–6: Take two more practice tests until you score 45+ consistently.
- Day 7: Review road signs by shape and colour, then book the test.
Pro tip
About a third of ICBC questions are sign-based. If you memorise what each shape and colour means, you can usually answer correctly even when the exact sign in the picture is unfamiliar.
On test day
- Bring two pieces of valid ID (one with a photo).
- Arrive 15 minutes early — the test fee and licence fee must be paid up front.
- Read each question twice; eliminate obviously wrong answers first.
- Don't second-guess — your first instinct after re-reading is usually right.
