ICBC Class 7 test guide: everything new drivers should know
From booking to test day — your full guide to the BC learner's licence.
British Columbia's Graduated Licensing Program (GLP) starts with the Class 7L (learner) licence. You must be at least 16, pass a vision and knowledge test, and then complete at least 12 months of supervised driving before booking the road test.
Booking the knowledge test
- Book online at icbc.com or walk into any driver licensing office.
- Knowledge test fee: $15 (subject to change). Licence fee: $17.
- Bring acceptable primary + secondary ID (passport, BC Services Card, etc.).
Class 7L restrictions
- Must have a supervisor (25+ with a full Class 5 licence) in the front seat.
- Zero blood alcohol; zero drug use.
- No driving between midnight and 5 a.m.
- Only the supervisor as passenger (plus immediate family).
- Display an 'L' sign on the back of the vehicle.
After the knowledge test
After 12 months as an L driver (or 9 months with an ICBC-approved driving course), you can book the Class 7N road test. Once you pass, you become a Novice (N) for at least 24 months before applying for a full Class 5.
