Parent's guide to helping teen drivers prepare

How parents can support new teen drivers through the learner's test process.

Helping a teen prepare for the knowledge test is less about lecturing and more about building good habits early. Sit with them through one or two practice tests, then let them study independently — but offer to quiz them in the car.

Set them up to pass

  1. Buy or download the official provincial driver's handbook — it is the only source of truth.
  2. Schedule the test only after they consistently score 90%+ on practice exams.
  3. Talk through real intersections on drives — point out signs, lane markings, and right-of-way.
  4. Practise 'commentary driving' — narrate what you see while driving so they hear hazard perception in real time.

After they pass

Most provinces have a graduated licence with strict rules: no alcohol, limited late-night driving, supervisor requirements. Print the restrictions and post them on the fridge for the first month.
