Right of way at Canadian intersections

Four-way stops, roundabouts, T-intersections — who goes first, every time.

Right-of-way questions show up on every provincial knowledge test. The rules are consistent across Canada — only the road designs change.

Four-way stop

  1. First vehicle to come to a complete stop goes first.
  2. If two arrive at the same time, the vehicle on the right goes first.
  3. If two facing each other arrive at the same time, straight-through beats left-turn.

Roundabouts

Vehicles already in the circle have right of way. Yield on entry, signal right before your exit, and never stop inside the roundabout.

Uncontrolled intersections

No signs or signals? Yield to the vehicle on your right. Always.

Emergency vehicles

Pull to the right and stop when you hear a siren or see flashing lights — even at a red light, unless doing so would cause a collision.
