Winter driving in Canada: the survival guide

Black ice, snow tires, skid recovery — what every Canadian driver needs to know.

Canadian winters punish unprepared drivers. The single biggest factor in winter safety is the tires under your car — and the second is how much you slow down.

Tire rules by province

  • Quebec: winter tires mandatory Dec 1 – Mar 15.
  • BC: winter tires (or chains) required on most highways Oct 1 – Apr 30.
  • Ontario: not mandatory but insurers must offer a discount.
  • All-season tires are legal but harden below 7 °C, losing significant grip.

How to handle a skid

  1. Ease off the gas — do not slam the brakes.
  2. Look where you want the car to go.
  3. Steer gently in that direction.
  4. Once the car straightens, accelerate smoothly to regain control.

Black ice clues

  • Pavement looks wet but it is below 0 °C.
  • Tires suddenly go quiet — less road noise.
  • Bridges, overpasses, and shaded sections freeze first.
