Rules of the road

Most ICBC rule questions test the basics — speed limits, right of way, and what you must do at intersections.

Key BC rules

  • Default urban speed limit: 50 km/h unless posted otherwise.
  • Default rural speed limit: 80 km/h unless posted otherwise.
  • At an uncontrolled intersection, yield to the vehicle on your right.
  • Stop at least 5 m back from a school bus with red lights flashing (both directions on undivided roads).
  • Slow Down, Move Over for stopped emergency / maintenance vehicles flashing lights.
