About the Ontario G2 Road Test Training
The Ontario G2 Road Test is the in-vehicle practical evaluation you must pass to advance your driver's licence in Ontario. An examiner scores your control of the vehicle, observation, decision-making, and ability to follow Ontario traffic laws across a real road route.
Eligibility
- Hold the prerequisite learner permit for the minimum required time
- Complete any mandatory supervised driving hours
- Bring a roadworthy, insured and properly plated vehicle
- Pass a vision screening when required
Skills evaluated
- Mirror, signal and blind-spot checks
- Lane changes, merging and highway driving
- Turns, intersections and right-of-way
- Parallel, hill and reverse parking
- Speed control and following distance
- Emergency stops and hazard response
Common reasons candidates fail
- Rolling stops or missed full stops
- Failing to shoulder-check before lane changes
- Improper speed for road or weather conditions
- Hesitation at intersections and yielding errors
- Poor lane position during turns
Preparation tips
- Take in-vehicle lessons with a licensed instructor
- Practice on the actual test route near your local centre
- Drive in varied conditions — night, rain, highways
- Do a pre-test mock evaluation with your instructor
- Arrive early, well rested, with documents in hand
Recommended training hours
Most candidates benefit from 10–20 hours of in-vehicle instruction with a qualified instructor before attempting the road test, plus supervised practice between lessons. New drivers typically need more; experienced drivers returning after a long break may need fewer.
