Plain-English explanations

Every question comes with an explanation so you understand the Ontario rule, not just the answer.

G1 Learner Licence

G1 is the first stage of Ontario's Graduated Licensing System. You'll take a 40-question multiple-choice knowledge test at a DriveTest centre, split into two 20-question sections — road signs and rules of the road. You need 16 out of 20 in each section (80%) to pass, and a vision screen at the same appointment.

G2 & G Road Tests

G2 is the second stage of Ontario's Graduated Licensing System and lets you drive alone within Ontario without a supervising driver. The full G licence is earned at the final road test and removes all GLS restrictions including the zero blood-alcohol limit. Both road tests still draw on the knowledge topics in the MTO Driver's Handbook — refresh them with mock exams before you book.

Motorcycle (M1 & M2)

Ontario motorcycle licensing also uses a graduated system: M1 is a knowledge-only learner stage, followed by M2 (an on-cycle road test) and finally the full M licence. Our motorcycle practice covers signs, lane positioning, intersection survival and rider safety essentials drawn from the MTO Motorcycle Handbook.

Ontario Road Signs Practice

Half of the Ontario G1 knowledge test is dedicated to recognizing road signs. We break sign practice into the four categories used in the MTO Driver's Handbook:

Regulatory signs

Stop, yield, speed limit, do-not-enter, HOV lane and turn restrictions — the Highway Traffic Act signs you must obey.

Warning signs

Yellow diamond signs warning of curves, school zones, hidden intersections, deer crossings and changing road conditions.

Temporary condition signs

Orange and fluorescent signs in Ontario construction zones — flag persons, lane shifts, reduced speeds and detours.

Information & guide signs

Green 400-series highway signs, blue service signs, brown tourism signs and white parking signs.

Rules of the Road

The other half of the Ontario knowledge test focuses on the Highway Traffic Act and safe driving practice. These are the topics you'll see most often on the G1:

Right of way

Uncontrolled intersections, four-way stops, roundabouts, merging traffic and yielding to emergency vehicles.

Intersections

Left and right turns, protected vs unprotected green lights, advanced greens and pedestrian crossovers.

Speed limits

Default Ontario limits: 50 km/h in cities, 80 km/h on rural roads, 100–110 km/h on 400-series highways.

Parking rules

Where you can and can't park, minimum distances from fire hydrants and crosswalks, and parallel parking technique.

School & community safety zones

Reduced speeds, when they apply, automated speed cameras, and the penalties for offences in these zones.

400-series highway driving

Lane discipline, safe following distances, merging onto 400-series freeways and dealing with large trucks.

Ontario Mock Exam

Our Ontario mock exam mirrors the real G1 knowledge test: 40 randomly selected multiple-choice questions, two timed sections (signs and rules), and an 80% pass threshold on each. You'll get a full breakdown by category at the end so you know exactly which topics to review before your DriveTest appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are on the Ontario G1 knowledge test?

The Ontario G1 knowledge test has 40 multiple-choice questions split into two sections of 20: one on road signs and one on rules of the road. Both sections cover topics from the MTO Driver's Handbook.

What score do I need to pass the Ontario G1 test?

You need at least 16 out of 20 correct in each of the two sections (80%). Failing either section means you fail the whole test and need to rebook at a DriveTest centre.

Can I take the Ontario knowledge test in other languages?

Yes. DriveTest offers the G1 knowledge test in over 25 languages including French, Arabic, Chinese (Simplified and Traditional), Hindi, Korean, Portuguese, Punjabi, Russian, Spanish, Tamil, Urdu and Vietnamese. Confirm availability at your local DriveTest centre.

How many times can I retake the G1 test?

There is no fixed retake limit, but each attempt costs a fee. We recommend practicing with full mock exams until you score above 90% consistently before re-booking your G1 at DriveTest.

What documents do I need to take the G1 test?

Bring identification that proves your legal name, date of birth and signature (for example a passport or permanent resident card), payment for the licensing package fee, and glasses or contacts if you need them for the vision screen.

How long do I have to wait between G1, G2 and G?

Under Ontario's Graduated Licensing System you must hold G1 for 12 months (or 8 months with a certified driving course) before the G2 road test, and then hold G2 for at least 12 months before the full G road test.
