Alberta Driver Licensing Overview
Class 7 — Learner
Written-only test, minimum age 14. You must hold Class 7 for at least 12 months (or 6 with approved driver education) before the Class 5 road test. Zero alcohol, supervised driving only.
Class 5-GDL — Probationary
Granted after passing the Class 5 basic road test. Two-year probationary stage with restrictions on alcohol, demerits and passengers.
Class 5 — Full Licence
Granted after passing the Class 5 advanced road test (or two years GDL-clean). Full driving privileges and no GDL restrictions.
Knowledge Test Format
The Alberta Class 7 knowledge test is a 30-question multiple-choice exam written at any Alberta Registry Agent. You must answer at least 25 questions correctly to pass — that's about 83%. The test covers two main areas:
Road signs
Regulatory, warning, construction and guide signs you'll see on Alberta roads. You need to identify them by shape, colour and meaning.
Rules of the road
Right of way, speed limits, GDL restrictions, school and playground zones, parking, intersections and safe driving habits.
Why practice with TEST PREP
Most Alberta learners fail the Class 7 test on their first attempt because they only skim the Basic Driver's Handbook. Our practice platform fixes that by drilling you on every category until your weakest topics become your strongest.
Alberta-specific question bank
Practice questions drawn from the Alberta Basic Driver's Handbook — speed limits, GDL rules and prairie driving conditions, not generic Canadian content.
Unlimited mock exams
Take as many full 30-question, Class 7-style mock exams as you want — no daily caps and no surprise paywalls.
Progress tracking
See category-level mastery for road signs and rules of the road so you know exactly when you're ready for the Registry.
Wrong-answer review
Every Alberta question you miss is re-queued so you only spend time on what you don't already know.
Mobile-friendly
Practice on your phone on the LRT in Edmonton or Calgary — no app install needed.
Plain-English explanations
Every question comes with an explanation referencing the Alberta handbook chapter, so you learn the rule, not just the answer.
Alberta driving courses
Each course is its own focused practice bank. Start with Class 7 to pass the learner's knowledge test, then move to road-test prep once you're licensed.

Start PracticeRoad signs on the Alberta knowledge test
About half of the Class 7 questions are road signs. You'll be asked to identify signs by shape and colour and to explain what to do when you see one. Practice each category below until you can identify any Alberta sign in under five seconds.
Regulatory signs
Stop, yield, speed limit, do-not-enter, no-turn and HOV lane signs you must obey by law on Alberta roads.
Warning signs
Yellow diamond signs warning of curves, intersections, school zones, hidden driveways, wildlife crossings and changing road conditions.
Construction signs
Orange work-zone signs covering lane closures, flag persons, reduced speeds, paving and detours on Alberta highways.
Guide & information signs
Green and blue signs for highway exits, services, parking and tourist information across Alberta.
Rules of the road for Alberta drivers
The remaining Class 7 questions cover Alberta-specific rules of the road, GDL restrictions and safe driving habits. Use the topics below as your study checklist.
Right of way
Uncontrolled intersections, four-way stops, roundabouts, merging traffic and yielding to emergency vehicles.
Intersections & turns
Left and right turns, protected vs unprotected green lights, advanced greens and pedestrian crossings in Alberta.
Speed limits
Default Alberta limits: 50 km/h in cities, 80 km/h on rural roads and 100–110 km/h on the QE2 and other primary highways.
School & playground zones
Reduced 30 km/h limits, when they apply (school days vs every day), and the doubled fines for speeding in them.
GDL restrictions
Class 7 zero alcohol, supervised driving only, no passengers beyond seatbelts, no driving between midnight and 5 a.m. without supervision.
Winter & rural driving
Black ice, blowing snow on the prairies, deer and moose on Highway 2, and dealing with large oil-and-gas service vehicles.
