Merging and lane changes without stress
How to enter a highway, switch lanes, and exit cleanly — every time.
Highway merging is one of the most-failed sections on Canadian road tests. The fix is mental: the on-ramp is for accelerating to traffic speed, not for waiting.
The merge sequence
- Signal on as you enter the ramp.
- Accelerate to match highway speed before you reach the merge point.
- Check your blind spot — actually turn your head.
- Merge smoothly into a gap. Do not stop on the ramp.
Safe lane change
Mirrors, signal, shoulder check, move. Hold your signal for at least three flashes before steering, and cancel it once the change is complete.
